MAUD

Considering themes surrounding art and people together, exploring tattoos became an interesting concept. I was interested by the idea of art being able to ‘suit’ a person, so the concept arose of creating a book and allowing the viewer to curate the order themselves and match the tattoo to portrait.

After researching, I found most tattoo series are photographed in the same, harsh lighting and surroundings, as well as in mostly masculine presenting imagery and settings. Therefore, photographing tattoos within a softer environment became a real drive behind the series.

Due to the feminine imagery within the work, this led to title of the book: MAUD. Maud Wagner was the first, female, registered tattoo artist within United States, so naturally the book title had to give her the credit she deserved.
